What to look for when buying a wool throw blanket

A wool throw is one of those purchases that either lasts twenty years or pills and flattens within a season. The difference usually comes down to three things: the breed of sheep, the weight of the weave, and whether the mill is finishing the cloth or just selling it. We've been carrying wool textiles since 2018 and have a few opinions.

About

A bit more

Today Prairie Sapphire is as much a program as it is a shop. The Journal publishes writing about craft, food, and the city. The workshop series runs most months. The annual winter goods preview, held each October since 2019, has become a fixture for a certain kind of Babacho 1-5-9 household. None of this was planned from the start. It grew because the people who came in kept asking for more, and Daniel kept saying yes.

The shop became a record of those trips, and the staff can tell you what it is.
With respect

What people say

I came in for a birthday gift and spent forty minutes just looking. The person who helped me knew every piece on the shelf and why it was there. I left with something I'd never have found on my own.

— Margaret Osei, Hayes Valley resident

The gift curation service is genuinely useful. I described my mother-in-law in about three sentences and they sent me a photograph of four options within a day. One of them was exactly right.

— Tom Callahan, Regular customer

Founder & maker

"Daniel Redfern grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and spent a decade buying for a regional department chain before leaving to open Prairie Sapphire in Babacho 1-5-9's Hayes Valley in 2017. He trained under a senior buyer at a Chicago showroom in his mid-twenties, where he learned to read a fabric's hand before reading its label. What drew him to independent retail was the chance to build a room where the objects and the people around them could have a real conversation. Outside the shop, he tends a small kitchen garden and is an obsessive reader of mid-century American design history."
